Murals are large scale paintings which are created directly onto walls, ceilings, and other large flat or complex surfaces. Murals can also be created on canvas and linen then installed onto the wall like a "mural wallpaper". They are one of the oldest human art form, as cave paintings at many human settlements suggest, and can be found all over the world decorating homes, businesses, institutions, and other private and public spaces. A wide variety of artistic styles can be used in mural painting, but most of them incorporate a large sense of scale, and the ability to convey a complex painting which is viewable up close or some distance away.
Mural painting dates back at least 30,000 years to cave paintings. In some cases these works have been preserved by the caves they inhabit, allowing later generations to study and learn from them. These ancient murals often depicted activities in which the people of that time period would partake in, from ritual ceremonies to scenes of hunting and gathering.
From a historical perspective, murals have appeared in enclosed spaces from caves and palaces to churches, museums, libraries, shopping centers and other public buildings. In the more contemporary era, murals have found their way to surfaces outside. Maybe we only see murals from the past on interiors because those are the ones that have been able to survive without having been eroded by natural disasters or by someone painting over them. Eventually the indoor mural started to move outdoors. Like the indoor mural painting, murals on the outside wall become an important part of the architectural surroundings when completed.
Murals are painted in a variety of ways, using oil paint or acrylic water based paints. The beauty of a wall mural is you can have it applied directly on the wall, or have the mural created in our studios on canvas or panels. Once the mural is completed it can be rolled up and transported to the desired wall. With this option if you decide to move to a new location the mural can travel with you. Murals rendered on panels can be perfect for outdoor areas.
