Trompe l'oeil is a French term meaning “trick or fool the eye”. Extensively used in Europe, it is a centuries old mural painting technique employing accurate perspective, photo realistic painting, and life like highlights and shading and to create a three dimensional painted illusion. As an art it has a long history extending as far back as 400 B.C. and was part of the Greek and Roman empires.
An ancient Greek legend tells of a contest between two renowned trompe l'oeil painters to see who was best. The first painter, whose name was Zeuxis, produced a still life painting so convincing that birds flew down from the sky to peck at the painted grapes. The master painter then turned to his opponent, Parrhasius, demanding that he pull back the curtains to reveal his painting. It was at that moment that Parrhasius knew he had won the contest, as his painting was the curtains themselves!
Another story tells that when Giotto, an Italian painter and architect from Florence, was still an assistant in the studio, he once painted a fly on the end of the nose of a man in a painting being created. When the master came back the next day, he spent several minutes trying to remove the fly from the painting before realizing it was not real at all.
Trompe l'oeil paintings are only convincing when the viewer is standing at the painting's vanishing point. This is the point where parallel lines seem to coverge on the horizon. If the viewer moves away from that point, then the illusion is not as successful. Therefore, mural artists will paint the trompe l'oeil scene from an angle where the majority will be viewing the piece. An entry doorway or seated area of the room may be perfect for a viewer to experience the illusion.
Trompe l'oeil can also be found painted on tables , wardrobes, and other pieces of furniture. An example would be a deck of playing cards that might appear to be sitting on the table, or a group of shelves with various books painted on a cabinet.
